Rings!
What is the best way to identify our parakeets?
Little nameplate? Maybe. T-shirt with number?
Why not...
However, we chose a more conventional way – rings.
It’s really powerful tool for better monitoring of birds born in our nest boxes. We can quickly get information about the age, place of birth or sex of parakeet.
We use two types of rings: ‘closed’ and ‘open’. Both have its advantages and disadvantages. Rings basically stay on the bird's leg because the foot is bigger than the upper part of the limb. That's why the closed ring, can only be worn on the bird while it is young, and the foot is still small (so it can go through the ring). The chick must be in the right age, or be in a certain size, if it's too small, it will quickly lose the bend. At the same time the 'knee' must already be big enough so the ring won’t go higher and block the joint. As you may have already noticed, the timing is very important here – our babies grow really fast, one or two-day delay and the ring won’t fit anymore. Open rings are much easier to put – you just open it, put on the leg, and close. Because of that, it can be used on adults too.
The open ones have been given to us by the government, have unique number, and the name of the legal authority – it’s like a bird ID. Unfortunately, the numbers are lengthy and goes around the ring which makes it impossible to read while watching the birds through the binoculars. Because of that, we put coloured rings on the other leg, in order for us to easily identify individuals from the distance. For that we prefer to use the closed ones, they are more difficult to put but also to remove.
| Open ring / Anilhas abertas |
